Lo spazio del planetario si trasforma in un "auditorium" dalla forma circolare dove il pubblico assiste al sorgere e al tramontare di rumorosi astri e
alla manifestazione di fenomeni celesti inconsueti, suoni provenienti da sfere superne lacerano la densa atmosfera di nebulose in espansione.
Lo spettatore può abbandonarsi a un ascolto inconsueto, sprofondando con lo sguardo nel buio tremolante della volta celeste.

Higher is a dance ritual inspired and based on the experience of clubbing and club dancing. Such form of dance,
which is not easily ascribed to any category, taking the cultural role of a social dance and also at times featuring various techniques,
styles and influences, is extremely explicative of what ultimately is the purpose of dancing, intended as a human form of expression.
Philosopher Julia Kristeva once said: “ As to be human embraced political, sexual, religious, familiar identity, we are undergoing a time of major identity crises.
We need to find a language that transcends the human in order to over come such crises and awake a new Renaissance.
This language can be dance”. I interpret this cathartic power of dance, as its being a form of prayer and celebration of existence,
and I found in the club a place for such transcending activity,
which entirely matches the often used association of clubs to churches,
however obscured by the most common understanding of clubbing as a mere recreational activity.

Catacomb Bomb is a 3-days event that opens the fall season of Raum as a tribute to itself.
It retraces the long excavation that today - after eleven years of activity - presents as a tangle of tunnels
branched without a preconceived plan in multiple directions, horizontal and vertical. Underground streets
that have created linear paths of growth, proliferation and extrusion, determining points of confluence between
forms of expression, and through several generational layers (three or maybe four).
A work that has been possible thanks to a quiet construction yard of underground builders of mines:
those devices designed to pierce the compact aggregation of substance, and produce instantaneous flashes of light
or annoying damage to the walls of disciplines. The 3-days is a scan of events and actions, largely created for the occasion,
which take place in the spaces Raum as the epicenter, but will involve the adjacent neighborhood by opening additional
scenarios through the streets of Ca’ Selvatica, Nosadella and Frassinago, in an intimate and dilated dimension, timely and festive.
The invited artists will participate with live actions or ‘gifts', things or actions that will be shared in different ways during the three days.
The program synthesizes a scenario of Italian research that in the complex situation of these years never ceases to produce,
stretching far beyond the national borders.

LORENZO SENNI "Oracle" @CTM Showcase at Eletronika Festival - Belo Horizonte, Brazil
Invited by the Eletronika Festival in Brazil, CTM is pleased to present two showcases that highlight artists
that follow their own distinct paths in exploring and breaking down musical structures and forms,
and that have collaboarted with CTM on numerous occations. The first of two showcases presents Lorenzo Senni,
who a recent repeat collaborator following his debut at CTM 2013.
The Milan-based artist first came to critical attention via his stunningly fresh full-length, Quantum Jelly (Editions Mego, 2012),
which exhibited Lorenzo Senni's love and interest in 90s trance/hard-trance music and his interest in the musical structures
and sound archetypes of this genre.
Senni works the most obvious characteristics from such music – spoon-fed with super-saws, build-ups of several minutes,
and over-the-top instant gratification melodies – into his own background in experimental, noise, and abstract computer music.
For instance, he'll create tracks with just one simple idea, and force it into a "non-build-up", a sonic spiral of repetitive and
percussive arpeggiated melodies, or, again using the idea of the "build-up" as a starting point, he'll make a non-uplifting
track that implicitly preserves its emotional tension and drama.
To present his musical concepts live, Senni has also developed the Oracle laser show, meant to provoke the senses
while he deconstructs 90's rave culture. Eletronika is a yearly festival that since 1999 has as mission to bring to stage new trends
in music and related arts. Brazilian avant-garde productions are supported and innovative international artists
are presented to the audience at Belo Horizonte.

'Superimpositions' is the hyper-coloured conceptual follow-up to multi-disciplinary Milanese artist,
Lorenzo Senni's landmark LP, 'Quantum Jelly' (Editions Mego, 2012).
It further consolidates, accelerates and evolves his idea of "Pointillistic Trance" - an ascetic, extreme approach
to the aesthetic essence of '90s-style trance/hard-trance - with a broader range of song structures,
minimalist moiré patterns, and tantric dancefloor arrangements, all executed to visceral impact and challenging, exhilarating effect.
Angling deeper into his stripped set-up - a computer-controlled JP8000 Roland Digital-Analog Modelled S-Source
Synthesiser - 'Superimpositions' reveals seven glistening examples of Lorenzo's current praxis,
finding the biting point between emotional, real-time human input, and the sleek tension of synthesis.
Opener, 'Happic' arches up with breathtaking effect, and never quite gives it back during its seemingly infinite ascent,
whilst 'Elegant, and Never Tiring' is a spine-tingling exercise in aerobic coefficients, and the title track tiers
teasing chords in a sisyphean struggle for deferred gratification.
At the LP's blinding, white hot core, the heart-rush flux of bass arpeggios and spiralling hi-end in 'Forever Headline'
threaten to careen off the platter, harnessing the rush of a million 'crasher kids circa '98, before closer 'PointillisticT'
broadsides with a cascade of lip-bitingly beautiful, melancholic chords.

As part of the Journal programme of events, artist Richard Sides presents a programme of activity in the ICA Theatre, col
laborating with the artists featured in his new video don't blow it in the vector(2014).
Taking place over two sessions (1pm – 4pm and 8pm – 12am), do blow it in the vector features a daytime,
seated lecture with performances from four musical practitioners: Theo Burt, Roc Jiménez de Cisneros (EVOL), Mark Fell and Lorenzo Senni.
In the evening session they will play their music.
On Sunday 7 September the Theatre hosts a temporary installation as a space to screen Richard Sides' new documentary.

ONE CIRCLE "Transparency" EP - out now on Gangs Of Ducks
Slicker sophomore EP of mutant bass and twisted electronics from Lorenzo Senni, Daniele Mana (Vaghe Stelle) and
Francesco Fantini's One Circle. 'Transparency' follows their 2013 debut for label/incubator, Left Blank with a murkily
ambiguous mixture of production fidelities, textures and styles delivered with a unique electronic accent.
They and it are testament to a rooted yet accelerated Italian electronic music scene, presenting impressionistic,
emotive visions referencing recent and hypermodern styles from a forward, somewhat detached perspective,
as with the beautifully garish vision of ecstatic hardstyle and bass music in 'Render' or the oily acid R&B sensuality of

"Painful Zombies Quickly Watch A Jinxed Graveyard" is an exhibition by Ian Law and Richard Sides with Lorenzo Senni.
Within the space of the exhibition, delimited by a screen of pleated bamboo, images evolve like tropical diseases.
Inverting the idea of a reworking that underlies Ian Law's artistic process, the pieces function as residues of the future.
Materials that accumulated in an empty flower shop in Sant'Ilario are transported in order to make room for the possibility of work.
These structural traces and illicit paraphernalia are treated with the same care as other reminders of our mortality,
held balanced in a rearrangement of the rules of matter, delayed decay.
Underneath this slowed temporal surface, bathed in green light, performed narratives emerge in confrontation with the
practice of Richard Sides. The recycled objects also claim a role as active characters, as the artist surrounds them with the
sensationalist vitality of newspaper headlines in a collage of image and text.
Add to this dimensional poetics the screeching, buzzing sounds of the cavernous space, produced and recorded after
midnight by Sides and Lorenzo Senni, and the time-space of this triple encounter begins to strain at the seams,
containing both the event of a hospitable crisis and that of hallucinatory contemplation.

This week we peer into the crenellated realms of contemporary computer music and digital extremes derived
from digital-based techniques and processes. All the music in this selection was created more or less over the past decade
- the earliest piece is taken from Florian Hecker's Prix Ars Electronica Award-winning 'Sun Pandämonium' (2003) - but we've
particularly focussed on more recent, bleeding-edge iterations of the sound thru outstanding works by the likes of Lorenzo Senni,
Gábor Lázár, EVOL, Opéra Mort, and Rene Hell,among others. Collected, they span a unique spectrum of timbres and arrangements
highlighting various compositional strategies,placing edited improvisations alongside algorithmic composition and experimental
research models. But while these concepts come acrossas impenetrable on paper, the results often yield brave, psychedelic and
synaesthetically-appealing new soundworlds for hungry, inquisitive ears. (Boomkat)

mobilização e confrontação. Mas também de como nos refugiamos de tudo isto e nos reencontramos, em recato, connosco

I've been working one full month in Portugal on the soundtrack of new Tiago Guedes work for 7 dancers, 'Hoje'.

Passaram-se cinco anos desde a sua última coreografia, Coisas Maravilhosas, tempo necessário para se desligar do a priori que
traçava o seu trabalho e preparar terreno para uma renovação em curso que se materializa em Hoje. É aqui que vamos reencontrar
Tiago Guedes à procura de um novo fôlego para prosseguir caminho. “Hoje vivemos tempos conturbados.
Não sabemos bem onde pomos os pés e que textura tem esse terreno”, diz-nos, revelando o ponto de partida desta sua nova criação:
um grupo de jovens bailarinos pisa um chão incerto que é transformado e os transforma pelo peso que exercem sobre ele.
Hoje é então esse aqui e agora onde se fala de instabilidade, manifestação, reivindicação, decisões conjuntas, mobilização e confrontação.
Também é o ponto culminante do Ciclo 2003-2013 | 10 Anos de Materiais Diversos, programa comemorativo da obra de um coreógrafo que
começou a dar os primeiros passos no ano em que criou e interpretou Materiais Diversos, um solo que viria a dar nome
à Associação Cultural de que é diretor artístico. Um programa feito de espetáculos e de livros, com escalas em Torres Novas, Lisboa e Porto,
que coloca em perspetiva o percurso de um criador que vem renovando o olhar sobre aquilo a que convencionamos chamar “dança”.

Tireless investigator of dance music’s mechanisms and working parts, and head of respected experimental label Presto!?,
the Italian musician produced one of last year’s most unique albums "Quantum Jelly" (on label Editions Mego).
An amazing deconstruction of sound and rave culture in the 90’s (chiefly trance and hard techno), carefully analyzing
it’s constituent parts for reuse in a very different context, with repetition and isolation as key concepts.
Quantum Jelly's music will be the basis for their audiovisual show at Atri del MACBA, an unusual space
that will be transformed by Senni through the installation of laser and smoke generated columns.

Sound Spill is an ongoing project by Thom O’Nions, Richard Sides and Haroon Mirza.
This will be its fifth manifestation after versions in the UK at S1, Sheffield; Spike Island,
Bristol and Seventeen, London as well as at West in Den Haag, The Netherlands.
This iteration of the project will be divided into two sections, the first on the 7th floor and the second on the 33rd floor of the iconic Manhattan building.
The curatorial research grant has enabled O’Nions and Sides to spend time in New York in order to seek artists outside the Zabludowicz Collection
for inclusion in the exhibition as well as to extend their independent practice in an important contemporary art capital. Sound Spill will include new
commissions made for the Collection’s dramatic Times Square location at 1500 Broadway. The resulting exhibition will extend their research interests
in the threshold between art production and exhibition-making. Their research will form the basis for a publication.

Guide to the Galaxy at Milan based Gloria Maria Gallery focuses on the influence of the digital world on some contemporary artistic practices.
The title of the group exhibition, on display until June 30, arises from "The Hitchikers's Guide to the Galaxy", a 70s' science fiction comedy
series that inspired the first web open encylopedias.
The show has been conceived by curator Attilia Fattori Franchini as a "guide" to explore questions like perception, reality and internet in the post-digital era.
Today digital media have changed the way we communicate, creating a kind of duality between physical and digital, fictional and personal and therefore influencing our understanding of reality.

Exceptional, cinematic take on the amazing world of the modern operating theatre,
in which the patient seems to have only a bit part as all eyes are on the monitor.
The final part of Ancarani’s trilogy is set in an operating theatre where a fabulous journey through the
human body is undertaken by robot arms, with the surgeon at the joystick. Science fiction-like,
it is reminiscent of Fantastic Voyage (1966). Ancarani captures the whole operation with minute precision,
beautifully lit (no bloody effects) like a dazzling choreography accompanied by an exciting soundtrack.

"QUANTUM JELLY" is 34th on FACT's 50 ALBUMS OF THE YEAR
Last year, AraabMusik won plenty of hearts (not to mention a fair few detractors) with Electronic Dream,
an album that reimagined naff Eurotrance as ecstatic thug-rap. Lorenzo Senni’s Quantum Jelly, by contrast,
isn’t going to lead to an Ultra Music co-sign,but it’s a similarly fascinating exercise in trance deconstructionism.
The Milanese multi-disciplinary artist borrows the genre’s strobing lead-lines, and expurgates literally everything else.
The results – spiralling Energy 52 hooks, left to hang in a vacuum, forever – are as enthralling as they are uncanny.
Mego calls Quantum Jelly “non-uplifting”; we’d plump for “shard-trance”.

Lorenzo Senni is an Italian man responsible for simply one of the best patterns of sound this
year (“albums”, we think the Mercury Music Prize call them) in the not so much mind-blowing as
mind-rewiring Quantum Jelly (Editions Mego). He is a man who thinks far too much about dance music.
Who thinks about it to a molecular level. He thinks about the quantum theory of dance music, devotes
his life to mapping its genome, and then makes records that sound like X-rays of dance music. Sort of.
Quantum Jelly, in fact, is almost impossible to put into words - so we won’t bother - we just know that
when we listen to it we hear all of music in a slightly different way to how we’ve heard it before.
And what more could anyone ask of an album in 2012 than that?? Just listen to it, honestly.
(Also, everything is recorded with just one synth one-take with no overdubs!
Holy fuck, it’s like he’s ripping the spinal cord out of trance and dangling it in front of our
eyes like a crazy, sadistic scientist.)
When Lorenzo records under the Stargate callsign, though, we’re talking same universe, different dimension.
We picked this stunning EP up on white one-sided vinyl when Lorenzo hit Cafe Oto with Lichens recently.
If you thought we were making Senni sound over-academic and earnest earlier then you’ll be surprised
by Stargate’s Hexplore Superfluidity EP - the only Earth adjective that really describes it is ‘lush’.
Beautiful, beautiful stripped-down-to-the-bare-atoms techno that sounds like it lives in space.
It not so much pulses as breathes. It’s not simply intelligent dance music, it’s sentient."

A record deeply influenced by his love of 90's trance/hard-trance music and a

Taking the most obvious characteristics of this kind of music (spoon fed with supersaws,
build-ups of several minutes and over-the-top-instant-gratification melodies) Senni worls
with these in relation to his own background in experiamental and noise cultuire.
Creating tracks with just one simple idea and forcing it into a typical "non-build-up",
a sonic spiral of repetitive and percussive arpeggiated melodies.
Using the idea of the "buildup" as a starting point to make a non-uplifting track that implicitly
preserves its emotional tension and drama.

The man behind Presto!? is Lorenzo Senni, who started the label a few years ago, but dislocated
his first release on Keshhhhh. That was 'Early Works', a collection of 'old' pieces (see Vital Weekly 654),
in Mego styled tradition. He's still quite young, but he has explored computer music quite well,
so 'Dunno' is his first real, up-to-date record, entirely crafted in the world of computers.
While it still has the power of the older Mego releases, Senni doesn't rely entirely on the world of noise for this one.
In a curious way he connects the computer noise of Now, with the more serious academic electronic from a
few decades ago. I am reminded of the work released by Marcus Schmickler (who mastered the Senni disc) 'Alters Of Science'
on Mego (see Vital Weekly 596), which had a similar approach to computer music.
Also the work of Evol might come close to this. Quite radical music but totally listenable. Refined brutality at work here.
Very abstract and definitely not easy listening. A major leap forward for him, as well as the world of noise.

Better Living Through Circuitry is a 1999 documentary about the Electronic Dance and Rave
movement of the 90's. It is the first such full-length film on the topic.
Lights shows, and in particular Laser shows, are linked to Rave culture, and their "Acid" way to draw
curved lines, patterns and abstract shapes it's necessary to create artificial environments where electronic
sounds can explode and have their translation into lights. Here starts a crucial feedback between sound
and lights; here you have a sound and its double described by activated photons; here you have "Figure eight" ad libitum.
Better Living Through Acid is a video documentation of my first laser studies.

QUANTUM JELLY is an extension of the sound installation "Streaming Illusions".
Data used to construct the abstract acoustic space and its illusory peculiarity in the Chapel
of Santa Maria dei Bulgari are reorganized in real-time into different perceptual parameters shifting
the focus and the approach to a condition close to a live set.
The only light in the room was a powerful MAX/Msp controlled Stroboscopic light.

L’intervento di Lorenzo Senni è un’installazione sonora progettata per la Cappella di Santa Maria dei
Bulgari, luogo accessibile solamente in occasione delle esequie dei più eminenti professori universitari.
Studiando le proprietà acustiche dell’ambiente, Streaming Illusions indaga le molteplici possibilità di
comporre e tracciare lo spazio ridefinendolo, generando così una dimensiona alterata, regolata da
nuovi canoni percettivi, che invita a considerare il suono nella sua più pura e astratta forma.
Attraverso un lavoro molto preciso sul fenomeno delle riflessioni delle onde sonore,
Lorenzo Senni si focalizza sulla riverberazione e sulle modalità con cui il suono decade, muore;
si tratta in questo caso di una morte fredda, scientifica che, in quanto “programmata”, viene constatata senza rituali né cerimonie.

In their new project, Controllo remoto, Orthographe shows the mechanism of the war machine using
all sorts of devices – from knocked together slide projectors to tracking spotlights and smoke machines.
The first war pictures ever made, those of the American Civil War (1861 -1865), are poignant and due to
their age also curiously magnificent. In contrast, the images from a night vision camera suggest computer games.
But the casualties are real. How tangible can projections on smoke be? With no less heavy a subject than war,
Orthographe plays a subtle game with the audience’s perception.

"ERINNERUNG" is a sound installation based on a mathematical system about prime numbers.
Just for one night you can listen our prime numbers score play inside the Ravenna's Planetarium while a
researcher "play" the cosmos.

"ERINNERUNG" - Fondazione Mario Merz / TORINO
Erinnerung is a music listening project that lasts about one hour.
We have two sound tracks one after the other with a short break between the two: the first is about 30 minutes
long and the second about 15. The performance is left to a computer connected to a sound sysyem.
Erinnerung consists in a sound transposition of a prime numbers series ordered by the multiples of the number six.
It can be visualized as an infinite sequence formed by ordered pairs that differs in two units (5 and 7; 11 and 13; 17 and 19...).
The characteristic of these pairs is to respectively precede and follow all the multiples of six. This infinite double series of
numbers does not include only the prime numbers but also the products of multiplied prime numbers. Starting from the
fourth pair (23 and 25) the prime numbers do not appear regularly as twin numbers but they come alone or they stay hidden
for longer and longer intervals. Then they appear again as pairs or alone.
The sound transposition of this pattern consists in pointing out, inside this infinite series of pairs, the non-prime numbers
that periodically repeat and that are associated to sine waves in the first composition and to glitches and rhythm impulses in
the second; the sound pattern becomes the negative of a positive represented by the prime numbers associated to the empty
space left by the sound interruption.
What has a sound and can be translated in a legible score performable countless times, are repetitions; for each prime number
appearing after the first pair 5 and 7 infinite repetition exist with regular intervals of the respective multiples.
This procedure generates a score following the rules of a bizarre embroidery; the ornament unravels in an infinite series of
broken and asymmetrical lines with a recurrent modulation. They zigzag between the two rows of twin numbers, joining in the
same family the multiples of each prime number.
The development of these lines allows, from a mathematical point of view, to predict, inside this double series, the appearance
of new prime numbers by exclusion of the multiples.
The scores of the two compositions come from the same numeric sequence and they follow in a geometric way the editing criterium.
What varies is the length associated to the single note-sound.
The tracks are created by different frequencies or impulses associated to the recurrence of the first 19 prime numbers multiples.
The superimposing of different frequencies creates a so called soundscape continuously expanding and condensing, open to abrupt rarefactions.
The score of erinnerung is virtual endless like the prime numbers series. The programming of the tracks can be generated and controlled
by a MAX/MSP patch. In this way the sound diffusion can have a duration so long as days or weeks.
